 Bethany began its sponsorship program in Albania in 1998. In 2000 we completed our 3rd Group Home/Orphanage. These are owned and run in a combined effort between Bethany and the Albanian government. They are located in Tirana, the capital city. We have American house parents who live in the group homes/orphanages and apply their skills in the care of the children as well as in other Bethany programs. The direct caregivers are Albanian. Our contract with the government of Albania allows us to care for children ages 0-5. Once they are 5 years old, they are transferred to another orphanage and out of Bethany’s care. Because of this situation, you may be assigned more than one child within a sponsorship commitment year.
The children cared for are either eligible for adoption (domestically in Albania/Europe, or overseas in the United States) or need care until their families are once again able to care for them. Until then, your sponsorship helps support these children.
In addition to our sponsorship program in Albania, Bethany provides adoption services, family social services, pregnancy counseling and medical services to the local Tirana, Shkodra, and Korca communities.
