Adoption is a journey, an exciting and usually joyful one, as is any kind of parenting. As on any journey, there will be questions, some of which are very specific to adoption and some of which pertain to any parent or adoptee. Bethany Christian Services of Wisconsin recognizes that this is a lifelong journey, and desires to provide ongoing workshops and events to assist children and families in their journey.

2008 Post Adoption Workshops

Discipline: Does Adoption Make a Difference?
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Location: TBA

All children need structure and stability in their lives and parents who model and monitor effective behaviors. Is disciplining an adopted child different than for biological children? Through this workshop you will learn effective strategies for dealing with general behavioral issues that are common in children, both biological and adopted.

Education, School, and Your Child
Monday, August 25, 2008

6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Location: TBA

The task of connecting your child with appropriate educational resources can be a daunting task, especially if your child has unique concerns. This workshop is designed to help you better understand common educational needs and the school resources available to meet those needs.

Child & Infant Massage: A Tool for Bonding
Date, Time, and Location: TBA

Child and infant massage is a way to express love to your child, encourage the bonding process, and promote sensory integration. This workshop is designed to provide information on the reasons for and benefits of massage with your adopted child, how to be sensitive to your child’s non-verbal signals, and an opportunity to hear about and practice techniques. This workshop is appropriate for families who have adopted both domestically and internationally.

Note: Please bring a doll or stuffed animal with you to practice techniques.

Understanding Post Adoption Depression
Tuesday, December 9, 2008

6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Location: TBA

There are many normal feelings that surround the adoption of a child. Until recently, only some of those feelings were openly discussed. This workshop is designed to discuss post adoption depression and learn ways to cope with the emotions and feelings that surround post adoption depression.
