Community Abstinence Programs
Bethany offers education programs to youth in the metropolitan Milwaukee area to promote abstinence from sex until marriage. We received federal funding through the State of Wisconsin for five years, and now have foundation and private donations for the program. The program is presented primarily to middle school aged youth in public and private schools, churches, and community centers. The curriculum is very interactive and includes speakers, videos, discussions, and role play with the goal to empower teens with the skills to resist pressure to have sex. Plan A for Abstinence
Bethany Christian Services has always offered free counseling to women in unplanned pregnancies. In 1998, Bethany Wisconsin received federal funding for its first prevention program: promoting abstinence from sex until marriage to youth. Since the federal funding ended, the program has continued through generous donations from individuals and foundations. This program is offered primarily in the Metropolitan Milwaukee area to middle and high school aged youth at public and private schools, churches, and community centers. An interactive curriculum is offered which includes speakers, videos, discussions, and role play. The goal is to empower youth with the skills to resist pressures to have sex. If children have been sexually abused, they are at high risk for early sexual activity. Bethany has developed a “Good Touch, Bad Touch” program for elementary aged children to teach self protection skills.
In 2006, Bethany was awarded a federal Community Based Abstinence Education Grant for a program that has been named “Plan A for Abstinence.” The goal of this program is to reduce the incidence of repeat pregnancies among pregnant and parenting teens. These teens are at high risk of becoming pregnant again as teens. A nationally recognized curriculum is being adapted for these 12 to 18 year olds in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine and Kenosha counties. Older teens and young adults will serve as peer mentors to participants. In subsequent years, the program will be extended to teen fathers and youth in foster care, maternity homes, and alternative schools.
For information regarding any of these programs, please call our Milwaukee office at 414.258.6640 or fill out a contact form.
