Program on hold

Advantages:
Families in this program may meet their children before making the final adoption decision.

Program Overview
Uzbekistan is a pilot program. Bethany Christian Services is registered in Uzbekistan with staff and office established in Tashkent in 2005. International adoption is new to this country and therefore it is important to remember that there can be changes in the current stated process and information/timeframes etc. Only families who live in a state with a Bethany office will be eligible at this time.

English speaking staff will assist families through out their adoption experience. While in Tashkent families will stay at a modern hotel with a business center with fax and internet access. It is possible that families will be expected to travel to other regions through out the country. All adoptions in Uzbekistan are processed through the Federal Ministry of Education and the regional and local Khokimiat (Mayor). There is no court system for adoption.

It is expected that families will receive a photo and brief medical/social information regarding a referral before they travel.

Uzbekistan is Central Asia's most populous country. Its 26 million people, concentrated in the south and east of the country, comprise nearly half the region's total population. Uzbekistan had been one of the poorest republics of the Soviet Union; much of its population was engaged in cotton farming in small rural collective farms (kolkhozy). In the recent years, the fraction of the rural population has continued to increase now reaching 63.5%. The population of Uzbekistan is very young: 34.1% of it are people younger than 14.
