Center for Adoption Resources, Education, and Support
CARES is a domestic, post-adoption program of Bethany that serves all members of the adoption triad (adoptees, birthparents, and adoptive parents). The program is designed to promote a healthy, positive, lifelong adoption experience.

  • Written, non-identifying medical and social background summaries
  • Written or verbal updates for adoptive/birthfamily members
  • Confidential Intermediary Services for adult adoptees and birthfamilies (search and reunion)
  • Assistance to all triad members with accessing the Michigan Central Adoption Registry
  • Assistance with Michigan Central Adoption Registry matches
  • Crisis intervention, assessment, and referral, as appropriate
  • Adoption education, training, and workshops
  • Adoption support and discussion groups
  • Referrals to community resources

Individuals and families come to CARES for a variety of reasons, and at varying times after the adoption finalization. Sometimes a young adult contacts us seeking to find a birthparent; other times, adoptive parents contact us with questions about their child's birthfamily history. CARES also facilitates communication between birthparents and adoptive families, at the request of either party, by forwarding updates. In addition, CARES offers resources and education about a wide range of adoption related issues.

All triad members who worked with Bethany to make a domestic adoption plan through the Grand Rapids branch may access CARES' services. Our services continue to be available for triad members who have relocated outside of West Michigan. Fees vary according to services provided.

Program hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., some evening activity meetings.
