Uncontrollable crying, repeating tantrums, withdrawn or aggressive behavior, excessive clinginess, difficult sleeping, loss of hope and constant fighting with others all can be signs that there are deeper issues within the heart of an adoptive child. Sometimes, long before adoptive parents ever first adopt their child, the trauma to their adoptive child has already been done. Experiences like abuse or neglect can often traumatize an adoptive child.
Bethany Christian Services created the ADOPTS counseling program for pre and post adoptive families because of this damage experienced by an adoptive child. ADOPTS (Therapy to Address Distress Of Post Trauma Stress in adoptive children) provides a comprehensive approach to helping an adoptive child get “unstuck,” and settle into the nurturing home adoptive parents strive to offer.
The program offers 16 weeks of individual and family counseling, 6 weeks of parent groups, and 6 weeks of child and adolescent groups with masters-level clinicians experienced in working with foster and adoptive children. These therapists have expertise and specific training in the areas of trauma, post traumatic stress disorder, and the ADOPTS model.
