Waiting Children
Proverbs 31: 8-9 NIV clearly says,
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.
At Bethany Christian Services, we believe that every child is precious in God’s sight. Bethany receives information from countries about hundreds of children with specific placement needs.
The children’s needs vary and can range from minor to moderate or significant.
Some children become available to us because they are simply older (school age) or a sibling group.
Others come because of extreme poverty in their country, which can cause malnutrition, developmental delays, and medical issues.
We receive children with physical, developmental and medical challenges. There are children with missing limbs, paralysis, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and other genetic conditions or syndromes.
Children also come from backgrounds of neglect, abandonment, mistreatment, and parental alcohol and drug abuse.
We invite you to see how God worked to find a family for a very special girl named Carli. Carli's Story
The advantages of adopting a waiting child:
- There is no wait time for a referral of a child. The child is your direct referral.
- There are opportunities for single women.
- Some organizations provide grants to help parents afford the adoption of specific waiting children.
- Most countries reduce fees for the children with special placement needs.
- Families have an opportunity to apply for a grant through Bethany’s Caring Connection Fund.
The challenges of adopting a waiting child:
- Some children will have lifelong needs and will require lifelong care.
- Many children are abandoned, so there is only limited social and medical information about them.
Bethany needs families willing to accept the limitations and challenges of these children. If your family will consider adopting one of these children, our experienced staff will prepare you and help find resources specific to your children.
If you would like to view photos and learn about some of the hundreds of special children, please fill out a

Here’s a great example of three boys with special needs who were friends in an orphanage in Lithuania. All of the boys had moderate special needs. Wyatt had a cleft lip and palate, missing fingers and toes, and other medical issues that hadn't been addressed in the orphanage. Sam was born with spina bifida, and Gytis has cystic fibrosis. All have been adopted through Bethany and continue their friendships here in the U.S.
