Haiti Relief and Recovery

Bethany has been called to care for the children of Haiti. The massive devastation has left current orphans clamoring for basic needs. Thousands of children are now orphaned, and many children are at risk of becoming orphaned. In the midst of this desperate and hopeless situation, we are called to present the hope of Christ.

The needs in Haiti are so urgent and unprecedented that we are asking you to consider making a gift commitment above your current commitment to Bethany’s ministry.

Bethany’s response to the crisis is taking place on several fronts:

  1. We are providing financial support to our partner organizations, God’s Littlest Angels and Foundation Enfants Jesus, for the basic care of children currently under their care and the hundreds of children who will come into their care because they have been displaced from their families. This involves providing food, clothing, and medical supplies to meet this urgent need.
  2. We will provide support, counseling, and care to keep families intact. A primary goal of our international ministry is to provide tools, resources, and support to keep children in families. Given the thousands of families who need basic care and assistance, we are developing an initiative to equip and strengthen families so their children do not have to be placed in orphanages.
  3. The State Department has requested assistance from Bethany's Michigan Refugee resettlement program to provide foster care services for orphaned and vulnerable children who may be coming to the US in the near future. Being physically and emotionally traumatized by this unprecedented catastrophic event, these children will have multiple physical and emotional needs. Their legal status (whether they are available for legal adoption or not) will most likely be unknown. Most children will need long term foster care. We are exploring ways to recruit and equip foster families in west Michigan and potentially around the country, to provide foster care services for the children from Haiti and to develop foster care services in Haiti.
We are committed to care for the children of Haiti and ask that you help us meet the vital needs of these children and provide families with temporary and long-term care.

Your commitment to our mission is at the heart of what we strive to achieve for all the children we serve. Thank you, in advance, for your prayerful consideration of your part in helping to alleviate the profound suffering during this crisis. Your faithful partnership is a tremendous blessing.

Haiti Contributions Qualify for 2009 Deduction
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that taxpayer contributions to the Haiti earthquake relief effort made between January 12 and February 28, 2010 may be deducted on 2009 income tax returns. Those who have already filed may amend their 2009 income tax return to take advantage of the new deduction. The language of the bill states that a taxpayer may treat any contribution, defined as a “cash contribution made for the relief of victims in areas affected by the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, for which a charitable contribution deduction is allowable under section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986,” made after January 11, 2010 and before March 1, 2010, as if such contribution were made on December 31, 2009. Please consult your tax advisor for more information.
