Dear Parents,

Among the many issues teens face, making wise choices about sexuality is one of the most critical. The culture we live in is teeming with sexual images, inappropriate messages and dangerous advice about sexuality. More than ever before, adolescents need their parents to help steer them through the sea of mixed messages that surrounds them. They also want reassurance that their parents understand what they are going through. It is therefore important for parents to communicate their values and standards for behavior.

A recent federally funded study of over 12,000 seventh through twelfth graders found that parent-child connectedness, along with clearly stated expectations for behavior, was a key factor in reducing all forms of high risk activity. No one knows your child like you do, and no “expert” can communicate your values better than you. When it comes to your child YOU are the expert!

Here at school our grade Grade (health/science…) class will taking a course called Game Plan (or Navigator) during this next quarter. This is a workbook that is designed to help teens understand the benefits of saving sexual activity for marriage and develop goals for their future. A summary of the curriculum is included along with questions that coincide with each chapter. A staff member from Teen Legacy of Orange City, Iowa will be presenting the information to our students on (dates class scheduled). Please detach and complete the permission slip below, and return to me by (date).

Parents and educators play an important role in communicating to teen’s values regarding sex and relationships. If you have any questions regarding this class you can reach me during the day at (school phone number) or if you would like to be in touch with Teen Legacy (a program of Bethany Christian Services) their number is 712.737.4831, ask for Rachel, Donna, or Julie.

Sincerely,
teacher
