Olson Family Story

The Olson Family's Story
Our adoption adventure began more than twenty-eight years ago when Megan was adopted as an infant. Her parents and brother welcomed her into their family and claimed her as their own when she was just two weeks old. By being placed for domestic adoption, Megan gained a family that she otherwise would never have had. By their examples in life and parenting, Megan’s parents taught her that it was possible to love children as your own, even though you had not given birth to them. It was this lesson that planted the desire in Megan’s heart to adopt.

Early in our marriage we both had a passion for ministry and mission work which lead us on several mission trips to Latin America. We also had a great love for children and a desire to reach out to orphans. Each year on our anniversary we set forth our dreams and goals for the upcoming year. On our second anniversary we began to plan for our adoption. We set a timeline and began researching adoption agencies. We both felt fully committed to God’s calling of adoption in our lives. We were both in graduate school and working a variety of jobs while trying to save money to pay for tuition, a car, the adoption, and the down payment on our first house. We were trusting God to provide finances and direction in our lives as Nic changed careers and looked for a job in business.

Our hearts were instantly drawn to Colombia because of our love for the people of Latin America. We were told of the long wait to adopt from Colombia, but we were confident that God would use that time to prepare our hearts and lives for the great responsibility of becoming parents. During our waiting, we completed graduate school and Nic took a job in business. Megan continued to enjoy teaching kindergarten and piano lesson, but the waiting was getting hard. Three months after Nic took his job we bought our first house. It was a big investment and a little scary. There were moments when neither of us were certain that we had made the right decision with Nic’s job or the purchase of our home, but God’s reassurance came as quite a surprise.

Just two weeks after moving our social worker called to tell us that we had a daughter in Colombia waiting for us. After twenty months of waiting, this was a shock because we were expecting to wait another seven to twelve months! Three weeks later we were on an airplane headed for Bogota, Colombia, praising God for His perfect timing and provisions leading up to our adoption.

We arrived in Bogota on Tuesday, May 3rd and went to the Ayudame Adoption House the next day to receive our daughter. Corinn Faith was just four and a half months old when she was placed in our arms. She is such a precious gift from God! We spent five weeks in Colombia during the court process and were blessed in so many ways throughout our time there.

God used every part of our adoption adventure, including Megan’s adoption, to teach us more about how He calls us to be adopted as His children. Each time the paperwork seemed overwhelming, or the waiting seemed too long, we reflected on the death of our savior Jesus, Christ and were reminded of God’s great love for us and the enormity of His great sacrifice so that we could be His children. God had placed such a great love in our hearts for Corinn that we were willing to go to great lengths to bring her home. God loves each of us so much that He went through even greater lengths, the death of His Son, Jesus, so that He can bring each of us home.

Corinn has adjusted beautifully in the four months that we have been home. She is growing and healthy, a constant source of joy in our lives. While in Colombia our hearts were again touched by the need for families. We are excited to begin the paperwork to adopt our second child and look forward to experiencing the adventure God has planned for us. We are so grateful to Show Hope for their financial help in our adoption process. God’s timing was absolutely perfect, right down to the details of a job and a home. God’s provision through Show Hope allowed us to complete our adoption journey and has challenged us to trust God to provide wherever He guides us.
