Becky's Story

Becky's Story
At age 17, Becky felt she had the world at her feet. She was a straight A student and star volleyball player with aspirations of going to Harvard to study law. She enjoyed a close relationship with her parents and grandparents and always strived to make them proud of her. Becky had maintained to her boyfriend of two years that she wanted to remain pure until they were married. After succumbing to pressure from her boyfriend and her peers, Becky found herself pregnant.

Fearful of disappointing her family and not being able to follow through with her academic goals, Becky looked into quick and easy solutions to solve her problem. The morning before she was to discuss abortion with a counselor at a clinic, she noticed a flyer on a bulletin board at her school. This flyer spoke of alternative options to abortion and giving life a chance. This flyer had our name at the bottom, Bethany Christian Services. Becky quickly wrote down the number and called at lunchtime to see if she could meet with a counselor that afternoon after school. Bethany’s birthparent counselor made time to meet her at a coffee shop near the school and talked about what an adoption plan looked like. Becky had not been in favor of abortion but saw it as her only option.

Now having a better alternative, she told the birthparent counselor she wanted to pursue an adoption plan. Excited about the fact she could pick the family for her child and have an open adoption plan, she sat her parents down and explained the situation to her family. After many tears, Becky’s parents hugged her and together, agreed to pursue an adoption plan through Bethany.

Two and one-half years later, Becky and her family still receive cards and pictures from her child’s adoptive family. Becky is able to send birthday and Christmas gifts to her child. Although at times she feels a loss, she thanks Bethany and her birthparent counselor for giving her the information she needed to make the right choice for her unborn child. Becky was able to pursue her dream and attends Harvard Law School where she has expressed the desire to study adoption law.
