Priceless Pearl
Priceless Pearl
a poem by Becky Browning
Precious, darling, cherub child
From the Saviour, meek and mild,
Years ago, with arms so bare,
Dad and I with many a prayer
Dared by faith to see your face--
What an awesome gift of grace!
Medics said a miracle
(Natural chances were but null)
Would be needed to bring home
A dear baby from the womb.
Peace from Heaven filled our soul.
We knew God was in control.
God's own Word has much to say
Of adoption--blessed way
To increase a family.
So it came quite naturally
To us to pursue that route.
Faith in God dispelled our doubt.
We were waiting for a while.
Some days it was hard to smile,
For the empty cradle swayed
As if mocking when we prayed.
But your dad encouraged me
To think optimistically.
We renewed our home study
Once, then twice--no end did see
To our waiting. On our own,
We called birthmoms on the phone
And spent time and money too.
Then each prospect did fall through.
One day--what a blessed day!--
BCS called us to say,
"You've been chosen!" Fast heartbeat!
"Will you please those words repeat."
"Yes, in town with mountain view,
There's a birthmom who wants you!"
From the time we got that news
Till your due date, we did choose
Never pinks nor blues in clothes.
"Boy or girl?"
"Why, no one knows!"
Doubts did mitigate our bliss:
"Will Birthmom go through with this?"
You were nine days overdue
(So your eyes could grow more blue!).
Birthmom didn't know if she
Would meet us. She did agree
To a chat after your birth,
On your second day on Earth.
That is when, for the first time,
We saw beauty that no rhyme
In the song of bird or man
Could convey (but Jesus can!).
Sacrificial birthmother
Wanted for you life better
Than her own predicament
Could provide. With some lament
And strong will (the scene holds charms),
She placed you into our arms.
What a blessed, gracious gift,
Evermore our hearts to lift!
She loved you since she was sure
That you lived inside of her.
She sends gifts and letters too;
We send pictures, news of you.
She will love you till the day
She meets God; then she can say:
"I did what You told me to.
You gave life, and I gave You,
Like dear Hannah, child so small
To be trained in Love and all
Of Your ways--to bless a pair
Who have asked for her in prayer."
Precious, darling Heidi girl!
Gift of Love--our priceless pearl!
All my love,
Mama
