Many may wonder, why abstinence?
“Abstinence is the only 100% effective protection from the possible physical, emotional, mental and social consequences of sex before marriage. Abstinence is the safest and healthiest lifestyle.” (Game Plan, 2001)
Comprehensive sex education can give a mixed message to adolescents – they are told that abstinence is the safest, but if they do decide to become sexually active, they should use protection. Teens see the latter as permission, and it takes the empowerment away from them.
Abstinence education encourages teens to build their self-control and respect for themselves and others by choosing to say no. By choosing to say no to sex, they are choosing to say yes to their future goals and dreams. It is also proven that teens that choose to abstain have a higher self-esteem and are less likely to be involved in other risky behaviors such as alcohol or drug use.
Fact: Over half of teenagers today (53%) are choosing abstinence. This number has steadily increased over the past decade. (CDC, 2000)
