Ryan Dobson spoke to an overflow crowd at the 2008 Annual Benefits Banquet in November, “God’s Heart for the Orphan.” Bethany supporters enthusiastically welcomed Dobson, author of Be Intolerant: Because Some Things are Just Stupid. Dobson is one of two adult children of Dr. James and Shirley Dobson, famous leaders in the Christian community.
In his talk, Dobson described some of his antics while growing up and expressed his appreciation for the hard work of parenthood now that he has his own young family. He thanked Bethany for its work and urged supporters to give generously. He said he is involved with the pro-life movement, not just because of his Christian faith. He was adopted when he was 6 weeks old.
Bethany Christian Services of Maryland also serves adoptive families and birth mothers and fathers after a placement decision is made. It is recognized for its innovation and leadership in protecting and enhancing the lives of children, young people and their families. Year after year, Bethany Maryland has achieved its goal of a 100% placement rate for every child who has come into its care.
Also taking the platform was a family recruited, prepared and studied by Bethany to accept a sibling group from the State of Maryland foster care system. Bethany made the effort to find this family under a contract with the Department of Human Resources Social Services Administration to find permanent families for Maryland’s children. The parents stepped forward out of a desire to grow their family and to take serious responsibility for the children of our State.
“We were challenged by Paulette (Holloway, the director of Bethany Maryland),” said the adoptive parent, Pastor Eric Redmond, “to follow our words with action.”
To truly highlight the power of adoption, the reigning Miss Maryland, Louise Schlegel, greeted the audience, referencing her adoption platform as a large part of who she is. The night was a spectacular event of laughter and tears that accomplished Bethany’s mission of revealing “God’s Hear For the Orphan”.
