As we approach the holidays we are also entering rotavirus season in Guatemala. Many of you have already noticed that your little ones are coming down with coughs and sniffles. Most of these cases are mild and treated with over the counter medication. Every once in a while an infection develops into something more serious. One of the more prevalent illnesses worldwide is Rotavirus Gastroenteritis. Many children in the adoption program come down with this every year and about 250,000 children (Merck & Co., Inc.) are seen in American emergency rooms for Rotavirus each year.
The following sites provide good information on the disease and treatment and prognosis for those affected. In our experience, properly treated, the disease rarely results in death.

Feel free to continue your research online or speak to your pediatrician if you want more information on this disease. Should your child contract the disease while in the adoption program we will let you know and the pediatricians in Guatemala will assess the severity and provide treatment. We will continue to update you periodically on the health of your children.
