As we approach the holiday season here are some modern Guatemalan Christmas traditions you can share with your family. Karla Figueroa, our program assistant in Guatemala, shared her family traditions with us.

Typically Guatemalan families spend Christmas Eve evening celebrating Christmas. The typical food shared is "tamales" but many families are now also cooking ham or turkey like their North American neighbors. There is also a beverage called "ponche," which is not eggnog, but a lot of seasonal fruits cooked together with water and cinnamon and sugar (according to Karla Figueroa it's "very good"). There are grapes, apples and dry fruits on the table. I'm sure one of the highlights for everyone are the fireworks at midnight. Then everyone hugs each other and finally, before opening the presents,
families say a prayer as a thank you for being all together and if there is any
member of the family who is not longer there, families thank the Lord for the
time those people were with us. Then, kids and adults know that "Santa Claus" is going to give out the presents.
