September 15 is Independence Day for Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico’s official Independence Day is on September 16 though the celebrations begin the night before. After 10 years of a revolutionary war in Mexico, Spain granted Central America its freedom from colonial rule in 1821. With the growth of the Hispanic population in the US, September 15 is increasingly celebrated in US cities.
