Yesterday, the Joint Council for Adoption (JCICS) and the National Council for Adoption (NCFA) have released a joint statement regarding Guatemala adoptions. Since the government of Guatemala has informed the Department of the State (DOS) that Guatemala will not process adoption cases that do not meet Hague standards after December 31, Bethany Christian Services agrees with recommendations from JCICS and NCFA and has currently stopped accepting referrals for children. Our attorneys have already communicated their intention to stop taking referrals as well.

Due to the current uncertainties in the Guatemala intercountry adoption process, Bethany officials are working in conjunction with the JCICS, NCFA and DOS and advocate that current cases be “grandfathered” before new procedures and laws would have an effect on those cases.

We encourage families and friends of Bethany to join us in
taking action as recommended by JCICS. We are working to keep our families informed. Our goal is to advocate for the children in Guatemala and the families in the US.

Please see your social worker for more information on the Guatemala 5000 Call to Action plan.
