A long awaited study on adoption identity formation was recently published by the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute.  A New York Times article about the study can be found
here.  A full study summary can be found on the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute website by clicking here.  We encourage every adoptive parent to check out this excellent study.  Also, adoption workers are encouraged to study the findings and consider how best to prepare families for the unique issues of identity formation their adopted child will face.  We greatly appreciate the time and effort spent on this wonderful resource.

Did you know that NOVEMBER is "National Adoption Month" in the United States?

The History of Adoption Month (taken from "NACAC:" North American Council on Adoptable Children) Formalized, time-specific adoption awareness campaigns originated more than 20 years ago. In May 1976, Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis issued the first state Adoption Week proclamation, and President Ford then officially proclaimed the week in a letter to the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) conference held later that year. As years went on, Adoption Week came to be observed during the week of Thanksgiving in November.

In 1986, NACAC helped coordinate a national "Calling Out" event based on an idea from Larry Gellerstein, then president of the Adoptive Parent Committee of New York. That year groups across North America braved late November weather and simultaneously assembled on state and provincial capitol steps to read statements about waiting children, and call out the names of waiting children in their state or province.

In 1990, NACAC decided to expand opportunities for raising awareness, and began advertising Adoption Week as National Adoption Awareness Month (November). The idea has quickly caught on, and Adoption Month has celebrated ever since.

In 2005, a Presidential Proclamation of November 19 marked "National Adoption Day" where thousands of children across the United States have their adoption finalized in court!

The recent typhoons have been a concern for our Bethany family. After connecting with our Philippines staff, we were informed that they are all safe and that they covet our continued prayers for recovery. Three reported orphanages were greatly affected: Heart of Mary Villa, House of Refuse and Hospicio de San Jose. None of the children in “our care” have been affected and the children are safe.

Bethany is also updating our travel packets for adoptive families, if you have any "hot spots", recommendations, etc to add, please let your social worker know and they will get the information to us to share with other families.  Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Three children and their families arrived home from the Philippines in June, and one family is leaving for Manila this week. We pray for safe travel for all Bethany families and their children.

Bethany continually receives information on waiting children from the Philippines that are in need of families.  ICAB sends information on the children to multiple agencies at the same time for special home-finding efforts.  If you are open to considering a waiting child, please let your social worker know or check out your Family Portal.

Adoptive Families Top 10 Articles of the Month (as received by email update)  features "Raising a Child of Another Race".  Not only is it a good article, but it also includes additional resources for transracial families.  We hope you will check it out!

6-26: From ICAB regarding H1N1

We received the following notice from ICAB (Intercountry Adoption Board) regarding the swine flu.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local worker.

Dear Partners:
This has reference to the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak which has officially reached global pandemic level. The spread of influenza is unlikely to be stopped but we hope that the spread of the infection in child caring agencies where the prospective adoptive children reside could be prevented. In this regard, the ICAB has adopted the following measures:

Prospective Adoptive Parents (PAPs) travelling from countries where the Influenza  A (H1N1) has been reported should do the following:

  • Monitor their health upon arrival
  • If they develop fever or have influenza-like symptoms upon arrival, they must immediately consult a doctor
  • If they have no symptoms, they should proceed with the meeting/turn-over of the child with them

The child caring agencies have been given the option to either allow the PAPs to visit their agencies for the official turn-over/release of the child with the PAPs or have the child brought to ICAB by the agency social worker for the official discharge

Bethany is excited to share that two families are leaving the end of May to pick up their children in the Philippines - May our Father bless these families in the travels, and also bless the children they are adopting.

Did you know that May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month?  This is celebrated in May to commemorate the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. This date was chosen because two important anniversaries occurred during this time: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in America on May 7, 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad (by many Chinese laborers) on May 10, 1869.
