Community Events

Bethany Playshops

Bethany Christian Services of South Central Iowa hosts periodic Bethany Playshops, which is a time for children who were adopted and their families to interact with one another. The children have fun playing games, doing art projects, and learning about different parts of the world.

Who’s invited: All children who were adopted are invited, as well as their siblings and parents and even grandparents. Families waiting to get a referral or placement or are waiting to travel to get their child are also invited.

What is the purpose: Children will be exposed to positive adult role models of the same race/culture as their birthparents. Children will be in a peer culture that normalizes adoption by being with lots of other children who were also adopted. Children and parents will join in the celebration of traditions and cultures around the world through art projects, games, and other play activities. Children and parents will learn about the history of other countries, as well as African American history. And it’s a lot of fun!

The next Bethany Playshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 6 (rain or shine) beginning at 11:30 AM. This very special Playshop in memory of Lacey will take place at Bever Park in the Zoo Hill pavilion (located behind Old MacDonald's Farm petting zoo). The park's address is: 2700 Bever Ave SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. This will be a time to enjoy lunch together, a special time for Playshop with some of Lacey's favorites, and then families can go through the zoo, go swimming, spend time with other adoptive families, or head home for nap time. Parents and children of all ages are welcome to come be a part of this Playshop, as there will be something for everyone! Please email playshop@bethany.org for any questions.
