Helping students transition into U.S. school.
Elimu is the Swahili word for “education.”
Elimu is an outreach program that strives to help newly-arrived refugees understand the U.S. educational system. We seek to empower families to get involved in their child’s education and help refugee students make a positive transition into school. Elimu offers bilingual and bicultural support to assist with translation and transportation for school-related appointments.
For both parents and youth, Elimu offers orientation sessions to help understand the value of, requirements for, and need for regular involvement and participation in the educational system.
Business Hours: Monday through Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Support sessions for parents and youth can include:
- Basic information about the U.S. school system
- Child development
- School policies
- Special education
- School rules and requirements
- Homework and how to study
- Positive peer relationships
