Why we serve children and families

Poverty, disease, violence, and catastrophes often put immense pressure on families, jeopardizing their ability to stay together. Poverty–particularly when paired with illness or violence–disrupts families.

And, according to UNICEF, nearly 90% of the world’s orphans have at least one living parent who cannot afford to safely care for them. Decades of research has shown that institutional care negatively affects a child’s developing brain and ability to form relationships.

Everyone deserves to be safe, loved, and connected

Positive change happens when we bring and keep families together. That's why we believe the solution is family-based care. Learn more about the difference we're making, together. View our Global Impact Report.

Children without families are at greater risk for homelessness, trafficking, early pregnancy, and developmental delays. It’s critical that we protect children and ensure they have the best possible care.

Where we help

Albania

We were the first organization to recruit and train foster families in Albania to provide loving, strong, and supportive homes for children who would otherwise grow up in an orphanage. In addition, our family preservation program empowers Albanian families to manage difficult socio-economic situations – so they can stay together.

Cambodia

In Cambodia, we partner with Children in Families (CIF) to strengthen family-based care services. Nearly one in every 350 Cambodian children live in an orphanage. Through family-based foster care, at-risk children can grow into healthy members of their families and communities.

Colombia

Political instability has caused more than 3 million Venezuelans to leave their country. In response to this need, we have established a welcome center in Cúcuta. It’s a safe place for Venezuelan children and families while they plan how to proceed. We provide basic provisions – such as food, water, and medicine – as well as access to legal guidance and mental health support. In the Capital, similar services are provided in addition to advocacy for families making the journey to Bogotá.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia has more than 5 million orphans. That’s why we work to prevent Ethiopian families from relinquishing their children to orphanages through family preservation programs. And it’s why we provide loving homes to children through our foster to adopt program. Additionally, in the Gambella refugee camps, we provide South Sudanese refugees with psychosocial support and we offer family-based care for unaccompanied or separated children.

Ghana

We have established foster care and adoption programs to provide vulnerable Ghanaian children with loving homes – so they can thrive. Additionally, the family preservation program aims to keep families together through the provision of basic needs and wrap around services – all with the goal of empowering the family to reach self-sustainability.

Haiti

Haiti remains the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. That’s why we partner with local churches and the Haitian government to develop family-based care services in Haiti. Our foster care program recruits and trains Haitian families to care for at-risk children. Our family preservation program keeps families together through the provision of basic needs. It also provides business and vocational training, which empower families to support themselves socially and economically.

South Africa

We work to improve child welfare in South Africa through a partnership with Setshabelo Family and Child Services in Botshabelo Free State. Our foster-to-adopt program recruits and trains families to care for children – rather than having them live in child and youth centers. We also offer a range of community-based family support services to prevent separation including: afterschool programming, parenting classes, and support and outreach services.

Uganda

In the summer of 2019, a new partnership with Wells of Hope will provide family-based care services to children whose parents are currently incarcerated in Kampala’s Maximum Security Prison. The family preservation program will help families gain access to food, health care, and assistance with school fees. It will also equip women with vocational skills to become stronger and self-sufficient. Due to stigma, children are not always able to stay with extended family while their parent serves their sentence. This pilot intervention will partner with the Ugandan church to recruit families to provide temporary or longer-term care for children.

Zambia

We work to improve child welfare services in Zambia through a partnership with The Christian Alliance for Children in Zambia (CACZ). Our foster-to-adopt program establishes loving and safe families for children currently living in orphanages. Throughout the training and placement process for foster families, we work to instill the vision that families will eventually adopt their foster child.
